George Wilhelms Jr.

George was born January 9, 1927 in Elizabeth, NJ, to Martha (Mielke) and George Wilhelms Sr. He is survived by his wife of 63 years Joan (Alber); children Joyce Barthold (H. Joseph) and George III (Laura); grandchildren Hal (Rachel), Douglas, and Meredith Barthold and George IV, Julia, Douglas, and Ella Wilhelms; brothers-in-law George Alber (Ellie) and Russ Alber (Ginni, deceased); and many nieces and nephews. He would have been a great-grandfather in June 2018.

George grew up in Elizabeth, NJ, graduated from Jefferson High School, and attended Newark College of Engineering.

He was a mechanical contractor in the family business Wilhelms Construction Company, Elizabeth. He enjoyed telling stories about, showing pictures of, and pointing out while driving on the NJ Turnpike the many ‘jobs’ he completed in chemical plants, refineries, and warehouses throughout his career.

George served in the U.S. Army, in the Field Artillery, from March 1945 through November 1946, spending time in Japan.

George was an active member of Townley Presbyterian Church, the Rossmoor Church, and Linden Ponds Community Church. He served on the boards of Union County Savings Bank and Evergreen Cemetery for many years and was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons.

An avid photographer and handyman, George enjoyed building models, golfing, gardening, and barbecuing. He cherished spending time with his family, traveling around the world with his wife Joan, and sharing pictures of those travels. He loved his manhattans, steaks, potatoes, chocolate, and potato chips. George will be truly missed and will always be in our hearts.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, December 2 at 10AM at Townley Presbyterian Church, 829 Salem Rd., Union, NJ. A service will also be held at Linden Ponds, Hingham, MA at a later date.
