John Monteiro Jr., 99, of Scituate, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2026. Born December 19, 1926, in East Providence, Rhode Island, he was the devoted son of the late John Monteiro Sr. and Eva (Sousa) Fontes. John was the beloved husband of the late Caroline “Carrie” (Rodrigues) Monteiro. Together, they shared 58 years of marriage filled with love and partnership until her passing in 2022.
A man of honor and commitment, John was drafted into the Navy at age 19 and served during World War II as a Seaman 2nd Class. He continued his dedication to his country in the Army Reserve, retiring after 30 years with the rank of Sergeant 1st Class. Beyond his military service, John brought the same work ethic to his civilian life. He operated heavy equipment for several construction firms and later became a Foreman for the Department of Public Works in Scituate, retiring in 1991. Not one to stay idle, John began driving as a relief bus driver for the town, ultimately retiring at age 90 after 22 years of service, always with a ready smile and a wave for every child who boarded his bus.
John was known for his unwavering faith and the power of his words. To him, a promise made was a promise kept. If anyone needed a hand, a ride, or a kind word, John was there without hesitation. In 1964, he married his wife, Carrie, and together they lovingly raised their blended family of seven- “yours, mine, and ours”—in a home overflowing with warmth, laughter, and welcome for all.
As a faithful member of Calvary Pentecostal Church in East Freetown, John was deeply involved in the Men’s Ministry and rarely missed Sunday School. He was known among friends as a steadfast “prayer warrior.” His favorite saying, “the Lord willing,” guided his actions every day. Family members fondly recall how he would start mornings, reading his Bible and praying for all his children. John’s generosity was legendary; helping others, saying, “we are blessed to be a blessing.”
John and Carrie treasured time with their grandchildren and delighted in family trips to Martha’s Vineyard. They also enthusiastically joined church excursions to Hershey, Pennsylvania, New York City, and Niagara Falls, where John’s presence filled every trip with joy.
He is survived by his children: Steve Fernandes (wife Penny), Anna Monteiro-Roderick (husband Ricky), Beverly “Jean” Monteiro-Cohen (husband Anthony), Lauri Ann Lopes, Joseph “Wolf” Lopes Jr. (wife Tracy), Adelle “Kitty” Lopes and John Monteiro 3rd. John’s legacy lives on in his 25 grandchildren, over 50 great-grandchildren, and the many nieces, nephews, and friends who were blessed by his kindness and strength.
