Kegan Christopher “Casey” Smith – of Mansfield, formerly of Scituate, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2022. He was 50 years old. Casey was born August 14, 1971, the son of the late James A. and Jean A. (Kirwan) Smith. He was a graduate of Scituate High School and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
Casey grew up in Scituate, a place he loved and where he enjoyed bringing his family over the years. He was very active in sports and played baseball, basketball and football. He was a lifelong Red Sox and Patriots fan and cheered on the UMass teams whenever he could.
Casey was proud of his Irish heritage and travelled to Ireland on a couple of occasions. He appreciated wandering around the countryside, exploring the cities and hanging out in the pubs. He had the gift of gab and was quick with a joke, always making people laugh. Casey was also a history buff who researched the Korean War and collected artifacts from his father’s time serving in the U.S. Army.
In addition to the gift of gab, Casey was a good writer. He was very creative and wrote a weekly series called “Tuesday Tommy” about a kid and his talking dog who went on adventures, often with Tommy’s Big Wheel. For more than a year, Casey sent these stories to family and friends who eagerly awaited each installment.
He was the devoted father of Kegan, Tarynn and Kieran Smith of Mansfield. More than anything, Casey loved his kids and was incredibly proud of them. He delighted in sharing stories about his kids with anyone who would listen. He loved cheering for them as they played sports or participated in other activities. Casey also shared with them his love of sports and his appreciation for all things Irish.
Casey was the loving brother of Jim Smith (Debbie) of New Milford, CT.; Patty Gilmartin (James) of Scituate; Kelly Alver (Craig) of West Hartford, CT.; and Kerry Smith of New Bedford.
He is the former husband of Kyle Chace of Mansfield.
Casey is also survived by many nieces and nephews, cousins and close friends.
A celebration of Casey’s life will take place at the Maritime Center, 119 Edward Foster Road in Scituate on Saturday, April 9th beginning at 5pm. All of his friends & family are invited to join together to remember Casey and share their favorite memories of him.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory made to the Jimmy Fund at https://www.jimmyfund.org/ would be appreciated.
