Mary Griffin

16 June, 193229 July, 2021

Griffin, Mary Ellen (King) of Scituate, originally from Worcester, peacefully on July 29 at age 89. Beloved wife of 57 years of James Griffin. Loving mother of James and his wife Kathleen, Thomas and his wife Dawn, and Stephen and his wife Doreen. Very proud and devoted Nana Mary to Catherine, Elizabeth, Benjamin, Anne, James (Jack), Erin, and Mary Claire. Mary Ellen also is survived by her siblings Kathleen Madaus, Sarah Jane Carney and her husband Robert, and James King and his wife Valerie, and her sister-in-law Joan Griffin, as well as many nieces and nephews and cousins in the US and Ireland. She was pre-deceased by her siblings Anthony King, Thomas King and his wife Phyllis, Agnes Doyle and her husband William, Phyllis Dykas and her husband Hugh, Elizabeth Miller and her husband Gerard, Ann Marie Robertson and her husband Arnold, her brother-in-law Gerald Madaus, and her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Catherine (Griffin) and John Maloney.

Mary Ellen was born in Worcester, the first daughter and third child of Thomas and Mary Kate (Flynn) King, immigrants from counties Clare and Leitrim, Ireland, and grew up in Worcester and Leicester among her large extended family. She graduated from Ascension High School in Worcester, where she made many life-long friends, and Becker College. She was a legal secretary for many years before raising her sons. She and her husband Jim were 50-year residents of Scituate, where they made many wonderful friends and had terrific caring neighbors. Recently they made their home at Proprietors Green where they received love, support, and excellent care.

She was the epitome of grit and grace, gallantly battling the mobility challenges she faced since her early 40s, while leading a full faith-filled life as an engaged wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt. Her family, friends, and Catholic faith were the most important things to her. She enjoyed watching her daily Mass, saying her rosary, completing her daily New York Times crossword – in pen and quickly – and a good cup of tea.

After her mother’s passing, she became the matriarch of the large and extended King family, keeping close tabs on everyone and never ever afraid to offer her opinion and perspective.

Mary Ellen’s family will celebrate her life at with a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, August 6 at 11 a.m., at St. Mary of the Nativity, her long-time parish, 1 Kent Street, Scituate. Per Mary Ellen’s request, there are no visiting hours. Burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

To Jim and the Griffin family. My most sincere sympathy on the loss of Mary, your amazing wife and mother. She was so caring and kind, always a lady and lived her life with a positive attitude.
Memories rush back to the many dinners we shared with Mary and Jim and good friends at the Barker Tavern. As Mary would say "The Barker".
Just can't forget how she gifted her delicious baked treats to family, friends and neighbors. One speciality was lemon poppyseed bread and my young grandson, Eric, ( at the time) renamed the bread to "Mary Poppins bread". Easier to say. That name remains today.
Thinking of you with love during this sad time.
Kay Leonard and family.

You and your beloved Mary have been an example to my “ right behind you” generation of the right way to live, and the right way to love. Mrs. Griffin, “Auntie Mary” at Doyle’s homes, is in our prayers. All of you, whom she so loved, are in our prayers.
