Stephen L. Ward, 67, of Cohasset, died peacefully at home on January 12th after a seven month battle with colon cancer. Stephen grew up in Scituate and graduated, in 1964 in the first graduating class of South Shore Vo-Tech High School. He then went on to be a mechanic in the U.S. Army. For the last forty years, Stephen was the owner of Cohasset Diesel & Gas Repair. Stephen is survived by his wife of nearly forty-six years, Judy (Young) Ward and two daughters, Lisa W. Ryan and her husband John of Scituate and Leanne W. Kearney and her husband Paul of Hanover and a sister; Susan (Sue) V. Hart and her husband Dennis of Norwell. He had four grandchildren that he loved dearly; Madeline Ryan, Parker Ryan, Nicholas Ryan and Ronan Kearney. He was the son of the late George M. Ward and Virginia (Chipman) Ward of Scituate.
Stephen loved his work and enjoyed the many people he met during the past four decades in business. He was considered the local expert on all things related to repairing and rebuilding engines on boats, trucks and heavy equipment. He was famous for his grizzly greetings, always owning only red Ford trucks, having a beard like Santa Claus and always carrying a screw driver in his back pocket. His work was his passion, but he also enjoyed a good weekend afternoon on the boat in Cohasset or Scituate Harbor or the North River with friends and family. He also loved collecting antique watch fobs, watching NASCAR races and tinkering with his layout of model trains. Stephen had many lifelong friends, whom he and Judy enjoyed skiing, traveling and boating with. His family would like to thank his friends who traveled from near and far to spend his last days with him. In lieu of flowers, donations in Stephen’s name may be made to the Harbor Methodist Church, 55 First Parish Rd., Scituate.
A memorial gathering of relatives and friends will be held on Tuesday, January 15th from 4-8PM at the Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Rd, Scituate.
