Susan Castleton Ryan passed away on January 8, 2026, leaving behind a legacy defined by passion, brilliance, and an unstoppable force of energy. Susan pursued every aspect of her life with intensity and purpose, and she was the truest definition of an advocate—in her profession, for her family, and for anyone who needed her voice.
Despite health challenges in recent years, Susan continued to maintain her law practice and remained a fierce, unwavering champion for her clients. She lived and breathed the law, bringing unmatched energy, preparation, and style to the courtroom. No one could rival her presence. Known for her impeccable fashion—and her signature 4+ inch heels—Susan made an impact the moment she entered a room.
Susan began her career as a teacher in the Newton Public Schools, where she quickly made her mark. Highly respected for her ability to teach and inspire, she helped shape the lives of countless students. She loved theater, creativity, and the exploration of children’s imagination, and her classroom productions were legendary. Even years later, former students continued to reach out to her, a testament to the profound influence she had during her years in education. As a family law attorney, Susan carried this same devotion forward, always putting children first and remaining a passionate advocate for education.
While still teaching, Susan listened to her inner voice calling her to do more. She enrolled at New England School of Law, teaching during the day and studying nights and weekends. She passed the bar on her first attempt and soon began building her own law practice. As her practice flourished, she retired from teaching and devoted herself fully to the law.
Susan’s professional impact extended far beyond her own office. She was deeply involved in continuing education, seminars, and the bar association, eventually serving as President of the Plymouth County Bar Association—a role she cherished and was deeply honored to hold. A true change maker, her influence across the South Shore and beyond was extraordinary. She was voted Best Attorney on the South Shore multiple times, recognition that reflected both her skill and her reputation.
Those closest to Susan knew another side of her as well—one marked by deep compassion, loyalty, and generosity. She would do anything for her family and made sure those she loved were always cared for. She quietly helped countless clients, performed extensive pro bono work, mentored others in the profession, and always made time for someone in need.
Outside the office, Susan loved to dance—especially to YMCA and anything by ABBA. She adored traveling to New York at Christmas to shop and see plays, and recently spent a memorable Christmas in London with her dear friend, Maureen Harmon. Her Christmas parties and cookie swaps were legendary highlights of the season, and she glowed as she welcomed friends into her home. Summers by her pool with family and friends created memories that will be cherished forever.
Susan was also a devoted dog lover. Over the years she shared her life with several beloved companions, but none more so than her most recent dog, Molly—Susan’s great love. Known affectionately as “the law dog,” Molly was a constant presence at the office, offering comfort and support, just as Susan did for so many.
Susan was predeceased by her husband, William Ryan. She will be deeply missed by her loving family: her sister and dear friend, Nancy Boccia (Carlo); her niece, Michelle Belsan (Peter); and her niece, Elizabeth Conrad (Adam). She was the proud and devoted great aunt to Lily Belsan, Mathew Belsan, and Vivienne Conrad, who were her greatest joy. She was loved by her extended family, her best friend Maureen Harmon, who cared for Susan with love and devotion, Carlo Boccia Jr., Carole Boccia, Anna Lewis, and their families. She is also survived by her office manager, Paula Gallagher and her care giver, Susannah Adams, both of whom were irreplaceable.
Susan Castleton Ryan lived boldly, loved fiercely, and leaves behind a legacy that will endure in the lives she touched and the paths she changed.
