A devoted husband for 58 years to Marilyn (Munn), a loving father to Elaine Ojala of Montpelier, VT and the late Bill Ojala, and a brother of the late Richard Ojala, Walter was a kind, gentle, and constant man who enriched the lives of so many.
Raised and educated in Quincy, Walter played football, hockey and baseball, and was inducted into the Quincy Baseball Hall of Fame. In December 1953, he was drafted into the Army and served in Korea. Upon his return, Walter married Marilyn, and the two lived in West Quincy where they started a family. In 1962, they moved to Scituate, where he built a welcoming home that continues to attract friends and family like bees to nectar.
Walter worked as a carpenter for Lester Fulton for many years. Each summer since 1972, Walter and his family have spent summer weeks vacationing at Papoose Pond in Maine, where they camped, sailed, swam, and played games around campfires with generations of lifelong friends.
An athlete throughout his life, Walter played golf as a member of the Ponkapoag Golf Club in Canton, coached Scituate Youth Baseball, and bowled with his friends regularly.
There are so many ways to remember Walter. He was a man of many talents, who had a quiet and unassuming nature, and always a steady hand on the keel. But in all these memories, he’ll likely be remembered with that smile of his, sharing an instinctive happiness that lightened spirits and evoked others to smile in return, reminding all around him that life is good and worthy of joy.
Visiting hours will be on Thursday, April 10th in the Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Rd, Scituate from 4pm-8pm. A Funeral Service will be celebrated in the First Baptist Church, 660 Country Way, Scituate on Friday, April 11th at 2PM. Burial will be private.
Donations in Walter’s name may be made to the First Baptist Church.
