MONTUORI, William J. – of Duxbury, formerly of Cohasset, passed away peacefully in his 95th year at the Pat Roche Hospice Home in Hingham on the morning of February 10, 2021 after a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of more than 57 years to the late Dorothy E. (Markowsky) Montuori, who predeceased him in 2015.
Born in Somerville, he was the son of the late Anthony and Evelyn (Bianchi) Montuori and brother to the late Ralph Montuori and Katherine Capone. He was the devoted father of Lisa Montuori Trimble and her husband Ramsey of Melrose and the late Robert D. Montuori. He is also survived by his brother Fred Montuori and his wife, Marilou, of Leominster, nieces and nephews in New England and FL, and a network of colleagues and friends.
Bill graduated from Arlington High School and joined the Navy in 1944 serving on a minesweeper in Japan at the end of WWII. He graduated from Northeastern University in 1952 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He worked for the Federal Highway Administration and several private engineering firms before starting ASEC Corporation in 1978 with John Monteiro. He became a Professional Civil Engineer and Professional Land Surveyor and was a long time member of the Mass Association of Land Surveyors and Civil Engineers. At ASEC, where he worked into his 80s, he served as the Director of Land Surveying, and his many projects included work on the Boston Big Dig, Central Artery, and the 3rd Harbor Tunnel. He was known for his attention to detail, accuracy, and the completeness of his project plans and was a professional mentor to many engineers and surveyors.
Outside of work, Bill was active in local politics, serving on the Cohasset Board of Health in the late 1960s and as a Water Commissioner from 1981-1987. Bill enjoyed staying physically active all his life even into his 90s. After college, he joined the Polecats Ski Club where he made lifelong friends, and he also became a passionate golfer. He and his wife became devoted volunteers of Friendship Home in Norwell, a support community for people with developmental disabilities and their families. They are especially remembered for spreading holiday cheer as Santa and Mrs. Claus at Friendship Home’s annual holiday party. Bill and Dorothy were also known for their love of travel, their hospitality, and their care for a succession of well-loved adopted dogs. Bill was an active member of the Norwell First Parish Church until his move to the Village at Duxbury at age 89. At the Village he maintained his interest in musical performance, history, politics, and good food, in addition to becoming an avid poker player and bocce champion. He and his family were particularly grateful for the staff of the Village, Village Home Services, and the Norwell VNA who helped Bill thrive over the past 5 years.
