

Alfred J. “Jack” Starkey, age 85, of Minatare, died Monday, March 27, 2006, at Heritage Health Care Center, Gering. A memorial service will be 10:30 A.M., Thursday, March 30, 2006, at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel at Scottsbluff with Pastor Jake Roberts officiating. Cremation was at Sunset Memorial Park Crematory at Scottsbluff. Jack was born May 31, 1920, at Ogallala, Nebraska to Frederick and Edith (Robins) Starkey. He lived at Ogallala until the age of ten and then moved with his family to a ranch north of Lewellen. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater from 1941 to 1945. He moved to Scotts Bluff County in 1948 and farmed six miles east and five and a half miles north of Minatare. On June 3, 1954, he married Clytie Zongker at Scottsbluff. He also worked 31 campaigns at Great Western Sugar, 25 years year-round, retiring as a sugar boiler on the 3rd floor. He enjoyed playing pinochle and also played in a county western band. Survivors include his wife, Clytie Starkey; son, A.J. Starkey of Minatare; daughter, Mary (Kevin) Stocker of Scottsbluff; stepdaughter, Marvel Hoff of Torrington; stepsons, Delmar Morris of Torrington and Jerry (Minnie) Morris of Kimball; 10 grandchildren; numerous great and great-great-grandchildren; brother, Joe (Charlene) Starkey of Colorado Springs, Colorado; sisters, Daisy Richardson of Grand Island, Patsy Kershaw of Colorado Springs; Ethel Hale of Kingsport, Tennessee, Norma (Walter) Brott of Ogallala and Faye (Jerry) Brown of Grand Island; and numerous nieces and nephews. His parents; two grandsons; son-in-law, Marvin Hoff; two brothers, Bill Starkey and Bob Starkey; and three sisters, Grace Kemplin, Mae Hayes and Delores Lane, preceded Jack in death.
