

Alvin William Schmidt, 91, of Scottsbluff, departed for his heavenly home, Sunday, November 20, 2005 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. A memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 23, 2005 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Scottsbluff with Pastor Jeffrey Grams officiating. Inurnment will be in West Lawn Cemetery in Gering. Cremation has taken place at Sunset Memorial Park Crematory. Alvin was born April 13, 1914 in Brunswick, NE to Ernest F. and Catherine M. (Melander) Schmidt. He had 13 brothers and sisters. A. W. (as he was known to his family and friends) had an interesting life from farming with his family, working in the shipyards in Portland, Oregon during WW II, owning Independent Oil and Broadway Gas, Dean’s Service Station and the 7 11 Store in Gering. He was also a licensed realtor with Gateway-Better Homes and Gardens. Alvin married Maxine Anne McKerrigan on December 31, 1936 in Harrisburg, NE. To this marriage, two children were born, Sandra Rochelle Rupp, Ann Arbor, MI and Rodney William (Colleen) Schmidt of Grand Island, NE. Following the death of Maxine, he married Luella Lucke, who had four sons; Wes (Carol) Lucke, Dallas, TX, Duane (Laura) Lucke of Scottsbluff, Stan(Jeanie) Lucke of Scottsbluff and Ed (Joan) Lucke of Silverdale, WA. A.W. was an avid golfer, bowler, and loved playing cards with his friends and family. He and Luella traveled extensively for seven years following their marriage. He is survived by his wife, six children, 11 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren 1 great-great granddaughter, sister: Evelyn Nastos, Seattle, WA and brothers: Eugene Pierce of Ferndale, WA and Kenneth Schmidt of Clardston, WA. He was preceded in death by his first wife Maxine, 1 granddaughter and 10 brothers and sisters.
