Mary Ann was born at home in Scottsbluff to Frederick and Amelia (Wirth) Schwabauer, joining her siblings Eugene and Evelyn. She was raised in Scottsbluff and graduated from Scottsbluff High School in 1954. In the fall of 1954, she entered nursing school at Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing which was affiliated with the University of Denver.
After graduation Mary Ann was offered a job at Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona, and her career in the operating room had begun. She was proud of being on the first open-heart surgery team there. Looking for new adventures, her next move was to Sacramento, California. Her career continued as Operating Room Supervisor at St. Mary’s Hospital in Scottsbluff and then at St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood, Colorado. She then worked in surgery at Aurora Community Hospital in Aurora, Colorado, and finally at the Denver Surgery Center.
About seven years ago, deciding she’d had enough of Denver traffic, she moved to Scottsbluff. She and Evelyn kidded that they’d keep each other out of the nursing home...and they did!!
Mary Ann was fun loving, and always up for an adventure with her many, many friends. One example was her skydiving at 75 years young!! She loved crewing for hot air balloons, and when she couldn’t crew, she still chased hot air balloons. Fun times were had over the years at Rockies, Bronco and Husker games, travels around the United States and overseas with good friends, and she loved hosting friends at “the Condo” in Fraser, Colorado.
Mary Ann is survived by nieces Jean Ann (Greg) Doxtater of Grand Island, New York; and Linda (Tim) Harimon of Scottsbluff. Nephews Larry (Nerita) Schwabauer of Melissa, Texas; Jerry (Beth) Schwabauer of Buhler, Kansas; and Kathy Schwabauer, wife of the late John Schwabauer, of Pittsboro, North Carolina. 20 great and great-great nieces and nephews survive her as well.
Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents, brother Eugene Schwabauer, sister and brother-in-law Evelyn and Don Reichert, and nephew John Schwabauer.
