

Miguel “Mike” Moreno, Sr., 82, of Gering, after a lengthy battle with cancer, with his beloved devoted wife and loving family at his side, was called to his glory by our Heavenly Father on Sunday, March 26, 2006. A funeral mass will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 31, 2006 at Christ the King Catholic Church in Gering with Fr. Gerald Harr officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park. A prayer vigil will be 6:00 p.m. Thursday at the church. Friends may call at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel between 9:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Thursday. Mike was born September 28, 1923 in Anna, Texas, the son of Roman (Pina) Moreno and Ruperta (Aguallo) Moreno. He was raised on a farm near College Station, TX where his father farmed, then moving to west Texas, near Waxahachie, TX. He was employed by the railroad in West Texas in 1941 and in Mullen, Ne in 1944. In 1942 the family came to the Scottsbluff area, where he encountered various employments, working the beet fields, he was employed by the Gering Sugar Factory for seven campaigns. In 1946 he was employed by Nebraska Potato Shippers in Gering until 1985 and also employed by Western Potatoes as a truck driver hauling potatoes for 25 campaigns in Alliance, NE. Mike retired when he was 68 years old due to his health, in spite of this, he continued to help his wife Phyllis at Moreno’s Restaurant, and caring for their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mike valued spending time with his family, playing an joking around with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed his time with his friends, he enjoyed music, dancing and traveling. Mike educated himself, learning to read. Survivors include his beloved wife Phyllis, children: Rose Mary (Joe) Smuckler of Parker, CO, Mike, Jr (Vicky) Moreno of Gering, NE, Louis (Kay) Moreno of Grand Island, Salvador (Lori) Moreno, Killeen, TX, Mickey (Paul) Valdez of Gering, Lydia (Jim) Benitez of Scottsbluff, NE, Janie (Margarito) Escamilla, and Mike Moreno, Jr. all of San Antonio, TX, and Maria Elena (Jose) Acosta of Castor Valley, CA, special granddaughter: Felisha Ybarra-Reynolds of Cincinnati, Ohio (whom he cherished and nurtured as his own), brother: Anastacio (Maria) Moreno of Gering, sisters-in-law Isabel Galvan of Grand Island, NE, Geraldine Pena of Denver, CO, 27 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren , numerous cousins, nephew and nieces. He was preceded to his heavenly home by his parents, Roman and Ruperta, sister: Maria Padilla, brother and sister-in-law: Juan and Augustina Moreno, daughter: Phyllis Ann Velasquez, uncles and aunts, granddaughter: Joanna Moreno, grandsons, Kevin and Keith Moreno, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Carmel and Helen Martinez, Freddie and Belen Martinez, Manuel Martinez and Julia Melgoza.
