Anyone that knew Steve Todd for more than 10 minutes had already been assigned a nickname...hopefully it was something you liked, or at the very least, could tolerate...because the entire family would be calling you by that name for the rest of your life.  The kids had nicknames, the grandkids had nicknames, the neighbors had nicknames and the dogs had nicknames...many of them embarrassing. We're a tough crowd...but Grandpa did have a soft spot for me and he loved to tease me! I spent a whole summer with my grandparents when I was a teenager and many of those hours were spent painting my long fingernails to match my outfit...Grandpa would watch me for a while, then come over and grab my hand and look for the longest fingernail...he'd pull that finger towards his nose telling me he needed an ""auger"" to help clear his stuffy nose!  Later that summer when his favorite ""auger"" snapped off of my pinky in one, long piece, I glued it to a Popsicle stick, put it in a tissue lined box, wrapped it up and gave it to him as a gift...he loved it.  Years later, when I brought my husband along for a visit, Grandpa pulled that little box out of a drawer and showed off that ""auger"".  That's how you knew he really loved you, he took the time to make jokes about you and saved the handmade gifts you made for him that had been inspired by the relentless joking.

I came to see what a truly amazing man he was when my Grandmother became disabled and fully dependent while battling ovarian cancer.  It was heartbreaking to watch such a strong, independent woman lose her ability to speak clearly, write, and feed herself.  Not only did Grandpa become her primary caregiver, working tirelessly to make sure she had everything she needed or wanted, but he was also able to understand her when she did speak. He even managed to bring her on a road trip to California for a visit.  I still have no idea where he found the energy to do it all without hiring professional help. 

My Grandpa must have been an amazing father too, he had to have been to raise a son that is such a great man. He is a man that Grandpa was proud to call his son and I am proud to call my Dad. My father Gary is a wonderful dad to his own 3 children and the 4 kids that ""glommed on"" (as my husband used to say) to our family and came to live in our house. He inherited his father's talent for taking care of people and over the past few years, spent many months living with any taking care of Grandpa. I'm sure they both appreciated how priceless that time was and I hope for both of them that they made up for the many years when a two week vacation was all the time they had to spend with each other. 

I will truly miss you Grandpa! I will miss the birthday card that always arrives a day before or exactly on my birthday.  I will miss calling you the day after Mom & Dad's anniversary to wish you a happy birthday and talking to you for ten minutes before you realize I am not my mom...not as much because my cell phone call ID has her name on it, but because we sound alike and talk alike...and how happy and surprised you would be that I remembered it was your birthday....and for the rest of my life, I will always smile and think of you every time I step on a piece of gum (you know why, and I'm sure you are laughing about it now)...and I will forever be grateful and proud to be Steve Todd's oldest grandchild!
