Cozette “Cozy” Morris Hawthorne, 94, passed away Thursday, April 12 after a brief illness. A graveside celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Seagoville, Texas at 11:00 AM. There will be a one hour visitation at Roselawn Funeral Home in Seagoville prior to the service.
Cozy was born in Mabank, Texas on August 12, 1923 to Ashby and Callie Morris. For the first eighteen years of her life, Cozy followed her family through 18 different relocations as both her mom and dad sought to remain employed during the Great Depression. Graduating from Athens High School in 1941, she began her work career as a secretary in Amarillo, Texas.
Relocating back to Dallas after World War II, she met the man of her dreams, Raymond “Ray” R. Hawthorne while he was completing his Chemical Engineering degree at Texas A&M. They married on May 15, 1948 thereby creating a dynamic and loving partnership that lasted for 58 years until separated by Ray’s death in 2006.
Although she was an accomplished artist and gardener, Cozy’s life was centered and focused upon her family and her Lord. To her, creating a stable environment in which her two sons, Jim and Bob, could grow and flourish as men under the leadership of Christ was her primary objective as a wife and mother. She served as judge, jury, advocate, nurse, and cheerleader freely dispensing justice and life lessons in equal measure. When her grandchildren started to arrive, she actively shifted her time and attention to them (although she became more of an advocate for them, rather than the judge and jury).
Cozy was preceded in death by her husband, Ray; her parents, Ashby and Callie Morris; one brother, Bill; and one sister, Ruby.
Survivors include a sister, Marie; two sons, Jim and his wife Susan, and Bob and his wife Mireya. She has 7 grandchildren, Sara, Will, Ben, Luke, Kathlynn, Trapp, and Leah; and 4 great-grandchildren, Joshua, Samuel, Hazel, and T.J.
She was a wonderful wife, mother, mother-in-law, and an extraordinary grandmother. Cozy “broke the mold” and we are all the better and richer for the lessons she taught us.
Heartfelt appreciation is expressed to the staff and many employees of C.C.Young for their compassionate care.
