He served as an AE-3 aboard the USS Ranger for the U.S. Navy. He retired from SBC Corporation. He was a loving husband, daddy, grandpa and great grandpa. His family was the most important thing to him and if you knew him, you instantly loved him.
Survived by his loving and devoted wife of 32 years, Linda Smith; daughter Kathryn Fry and her husband Sean Fry; daughter Tonya Shanz; son Chad Smith and his wife Kristi Smith; daughter Kristy Barnard and her husband Matt Barnard; and daughter Racheal Howard. Grandkids, Blake McCraw, Nichole Fry, Morgan Shanz, Marissa Fry, Madison Owens and her husband Donovan Owens, Savanah Barnard, Cody Barnard, Devin Howard, Harper Smith, and Hayes Smith. Great grandchildren, Skylar McCraw, Alistair Sanderson, Daxton Owens, Kane McCraw, Katherine Redd, and Avery Redd.
He is preceded in death by his father, John Newton Smith, his sister Janice Smith, his mother, Pauline Hale Smith, and grandson, Sean Fry.
A visitation for John will be held Monday, January 23, 2023 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Roselawn Funeral Home, 1000 S Highway 175, Seagoville, TX 75159. A funeral service will occur Tuesday, January 24, 2023 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, 1000 S Highway 175, Seagoville, TX 75159. A committal service will occur Tuesday, January 24, 2023 from 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, 1000 S Highway 175, Seagoville, TX 75159.
Serving as pallbearers are Stephen Slaton, Blake McCraw, Cody Barnard, Michael Murray, Matt Barnard and Scott Cribbs.
