Kay Harris, 98, of Kaufman, Texas, went home to be with the Lord on September 2, 2020 at Kaufman Healthcare Center. Kay was born December 29, 1921 to Benjamin and Mary Mollie Shelton in Sullivan, Indiana. She graduated from Sullivan High School and Brown Business College, Elkhart, Indiana. After graduation, Kay wanted to support the efforts of the military in World War II. Against her parents’ wishes, she joined the US Navy Waves and was based in Washington, D.C. Kay was assigned to the Code and Signal Section of the Division of Naval Communications where she sent and received coded messages to fighting forces around the world. While she did not consider herself a warrior or a hero, she was held in the highest regards by other WWII veterans for the work of the Code and Signal Section. Kay married A. C. Harris October 4, 1946 in Sullivan. They had one daughter, Patricia Leigh Harris. A.C., Kay and Patti moved many times for A. C.’s work with the Federal Bureau of Prisons. In every town, Kay made many friends and participated in clubs and sports. In 1992, A.C., Kay and Patti built their retirement home in Kaufman, where they were an integral part of their community. Kay and A.C. were married for 55 years until his passing June 14, 2002. She was a Life Member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority. Kay is survived by Patricia, many nieces and nephews, and many friends.
