Robert G. Tidwell was born on May 17, 1947. He went to be with the Lord on February 15, 2022 after battling heart disease. He graduated from W. W. Samuell high school in Dallas, TX in 1965. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Abilene Christian University at Dallas, and later, a Master’s of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, TX.
Robert wore many different hats during his life. In the summers during his high school years he worked as a carpenter building houses. He also worked for the post office for many years, rising to be one of the most efficient members of the administration in Arlington, TX. He left his position at the post office to attend the seminary. He was ordained as a minister on May 10, 1987, at Bethany Baptist church in Dallas, TX. He taught at Valley Baptist Academy in Harlingen, TX and San Jacinto Cristian Academy in Amarillo, TX. While he was in Amarillo, he began working part time for H&R Block. He moved back to Dallas when taking a full-time position at H&R Block, from which he later retired.
Robert enjoyed a number of different hobbies. He was an avid stamp collector, especially of commemorative first-day covers of U.S. stamps; to which he particularly enjoyed adding his own historical context. He had a keen interest in U.S. Presidents; collecting their stamps, reading their biographies, and visiting their official libraries. He very nearly completed a personal goal of visiting a historical site connected with every president; lacking only one. Robert also had an interest in genealogy, researching both his maternal and paternal lines; the Massengills and Tidwells respectively. He served as Publication Director as a member of the Dallas Genealogical Society. While conducting genealogical research with his cousin, Janet Branstetter, they made several trips to Salt Lake City, UT, Washington D.C., and Dickson County, TN. He enjoyed refereeing basketball, football, and softball. In his spare time he enjoyed photography and quilting.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents Paul E. Tidwell and Mary Massengill Tidwell. He is survived by his brother Gary Tidwell and wife Vickie of Seagoville, TX, nephews Paul and David Tidwell, great nephews Michael and Benjamin Tidwell, and one grand niece, Carolynn Tidwell of Dallas, TX. He will be missed by his dear friends and former students Freddie Flores of Dallas, TX and Javier Morales and wife Cristina and daughter Becca of Round Rock, TX. Robert often thought of Becca as the granddaughter he never had.
Gary said they laughed about it now, but if he ever got Robert’s goat growing up, he would tell Gary, “you’re gonna pay for that, buddy, and not with money!”
A visitation for Robert will be held Saturday, February 26, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at First Baptist Church of Seagoville, 108 E. Farmers Rd., Seagoville, TX 75159. A funeral service will occur Saturday, February 26, 2022 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, 108 E. Farmers Rd., Seagoville, TX 75159. A committal service will occur Saturday, February 26, 2022 from 2:30 PM to 3:00 PM at Laurel Oaks Memorial Park, 12649 Lake June Rd., Balch Springs, TX 75180.
