She was born on January 21, 1949, in Suva, Fiji, to her parents Ramessar Prasad and Ram Kumari Prasad. One of nine children, Bidya grew up in a close and loving household alongside her siblings: Indar Prasad, Kissun Prasad, Bissun Prasad, Chandar Prasad, Satya Nand, Rajendra Prasad, Ben Mati, and Raj Mati. Her upbringing in Suva instilled in her strong family values and a deep sense of belonging that stayed with her throughout her life.
Bidya later immigrated to Vancouver, Canada, beginning a new chapter marked by courage and hope. She married Jai Lal, and in 1980 they moved to Monterey, California, where she built a life centered on love and connection. She was a devoted and loving stepmother to Jimmy, Veena, Neera Monica Lal, and Simi Johnson, welcoming each of them wholeheartedly into her life.
For 12 years, Bidya worked in the hospitality industry, a role that reflected her natural warmth and care for others. Those who knew her will remember her as exceptionally kindhearted — someone who welcomed anyone and everyone with open arms. Family, friends, and even strangers quickly felt at home in her presence. Her life revolved around an expansive extended family and a wide circle of friends, all of whom she cherished deeply.
