
After months of fighting with multiple health complications, he chose hospice and passed away peacefully on March 25, 2005 at his home in Seattle at the age of 80. Born December 15, 1924 in Seattle, WA to Albert V. Griffiths and Martha Miller Griffiths. He was the grandson of Captain James Griffiths. He graduated from the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey in 1943. Afterwards, Bert joined the Navy and proudly served his country during WWII on the USS Guam. He received his AB from Harvard University in 1948 and his MBA from Harvard Business School in 1950.
After graduating he spent ten years working in the Philippines. When he returned to Seattle he began work at Washington Mutual Bank in 1961 and retired in 1971 as Assistant Vice President. He was Corporate Secretary of the family business, Mogul Towing and Washington Tug and Barge Company. He became President of the company in 1976 until they sold the company to Monmouth Steamship in 1979. He fully retired in 1985.
Bert enjoyed world traveling, fine dining, playing bridge and entertaining friends with his wife Jackie. He enjoyed working in the garden and spending time at the summerhouse on Whidbey Island.
Bert was a life-member of the Seattle Yacht Club, member of the Fox Club, Useless Bay Golf & Country Club, and former member of the Seattle Golf Club and the Seattle Tennis Club.
Bert was preceded in death by his loving wife of 38 years Jacqueline Polson Griffiths in 2001. He is survived by his son Scott and daughter Susan Jacqueline Dunlap husband Albert and his granddaughters Jacqueline and Emily Dunlap. He adored his granddaughters and loved his family very much. His stories, intelligence, humor and wit will be greatly missed.
