Anastasia Retelas was quite the character. Coming to Canada and then to the US from Greece, she sought to find a better life than the one in her turmoil-filled country. Her experiences led her to develop a strong will to live, to love, and to express her strong ethics to the world. As a young girl in a small, mountainous village of Greece, she would sing songs as she worked in the fields through rain, snow, war, and political unrest. The power of her love resonated with everyone she met. She would sing the folk songs that kept her going through the toughest times. Even in her old age, when her voice had become soft, she continued to sing on and touch the hearts of even the most random of people. Mom, sister, wife, Yia Yia, servant of God, she possessed a spirit that reflected the soul of the old-world. With her gone, there will be no filling of this void - all we can do to get through this is to try to remember her strong will to fight to the very end. She is survived by her son, James, of Seattle, her daughter, Katherine, of Tempe, AZ and husband, Ed and the light of her life, her grandson, Edward. The last surviving of her 9 siblings is her sister, Areti, of Kastri, Greece. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gust Retelas. May her memory be eternal.
