Carl (Bud) Boe passed away in Federal Way of complications from bypass surgery on May 25, 2011.
Carl was born in 1928 in Chehalis to Carl O. Boe and Margaret Finley Boe. He graduated from Chehalis High School in 1946, and was senior class president. He had two tours in the US Marine Corps, as an Aviation Structural Mechanic in VMF-214 (Black Sheep Squadron) and later in VMF-352; he credited his time as a Marine for his ability to learn. He proudly wore his crew cut until his death. After his discharge he attended Eastern Washington State College, graduating in 1954 with a BA in Education, and married Marilyn Mae Hill Boe within a few days of graduation.
Carl was a dedicated industrial arts teacher for more than 30 years in Washington State, first in Garfield, Washington, then ten years in Winlock and then finished his career in the Highline School district at Chinook, Glendale and Pacific Junior High Schools. He was the Washington Industrial Arts Association (WIAA) Teacher of the Year in 1983 and twice past president of WIAA. In addition, he coached football, basketball and baseball in Garfield and Winlock, and girls’ basketball at Pacific. He was a basketball referee and taught drivers education. He retired from teaching in 1985. After teaching he worked for the Bon Marche at the local mall as a maintenance supervisor.
Carl was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying water-skiing, boating, camping, hiking and kayaking. He continued to swim almost every day until shortly before his death. He enjoyed woodcarving and taught some classes at Western Washington and Central Washington Universities, and later took up wood-turning of bowls and pens. He was an avid high school and college basketball fan (once watching 13 basketball games at 6 colleges in an eight day trip to the east coast).
He married Charlotte Larson Dutton in 1998.
He is survived by:
• his wife Charlotte,
• his sister Peggy Stringfellow of Pasco,
• his son Carl David and wife Betty Joy of Auburn;
• son Mark and wife Shelley of Harleysville, Pennsylvania;
• daughter Karen Marie Mauzey of Federal Way, and her children Matt and Nicole;
• son Brad of Love’s Park, Illinois;
• son Lance of Federal Way;
• son Daniel and wife Heidi of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and his son Dano.
He is preceded in death by his first wife of over 40 years and mother of his children, Marilyn.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm Friday June 3, at Steel Lake Presbyterian Church, 1829 S. 308th St., Federal Way. A reception in the church hall will follow the ceremony. In lieu of flowers, Carl was a great believer in giving back - please donate to your favorite charity.
