I have been very blessed to have Carl Hodges as my Dad. 
He was always trying to make me feel better.  Even on February 10th when I was waiting in the ER with him the doctor told us he had a fractured hip that needed surgery. After the doctor left, I was looking kind of sad and he said "I don't think I'll be walking out of here".  I said "I know."  Then he smiled at me and said "But I  might be flying out"  And we both laughed and agreed that would be ok.  He was right.

When I think of Uncle Carl, I always think of rocks and rock shows.  How he and my brother Mark would go off for hours to talk about rocks, find rocks, shine rocks and make things out of rocks!  The love of rocks and incorporating their beauty into every day tools is something Mark has never lost, and it seems, my 6-year-old son Jesse is beginning to develop.

I will so miss Uncle Carl's laughing eyes and teasing ways.  He was such an unassuming man who gave so much to his family and his country.  I'm grateful Jesse had the opportunity to meet Uncle Carl, even though it was just one time.  The world is a better place for having Uncle Carl for as long as we did.  We love you.

My first memory of Uncle Carl is him dancing with me and singing â€œThe Good Ship Lollypop.â€  He was always laughing, teasing, joking, singing little ditties like, â€œOne bright day, in the middle of the night.â€

My next memory, is when somebody plopped a diapered Leslie down in my childâ€™s Mexican chair and told me to watch her and not let her get up while they said goodbye to Uncle Carl and Norma as they went off on their honeymoon.  That was my first babysitting job, when I wasnâ€™t much bigger than she was.

I can remember driving up I-5, having a truck pull up next to us, looking up and seeing Uncle Carl waving at us.  For a year that we lived in Tacoma, almost every time we came to Seattle, we would see Uncle Carl driving the produce truck.  It was fun watching out for his smiling face.

Even in the later years, when his health went down hill, he was still able to smile and tease. I will miss visitng with him.


Dear Norma & family.  We just returned from a trip and learned of your loss.  It was our pleasure to have known Carl and to work with him as he was Secretary of our Evergreen Chapter, 1st Marine Division Association.  He was more of a U.S. Marine than a lot of people we have known.  He will be sorely missed by our membership and we'll keep him and each of you in our thoughts and prayers. My favorite and most admired uncle.  When I was a boy I told all my friends, with great pride, that my uncle Karl fought in the South Pacific in WW2. When I told friends at work today I had the same fealing of chest inflating pride but today I also had to choke back the tiers.
