She is treasured by her beloved children, son Jeffrey Cohen and his wife Betsy, and daughter Beth Cohen and her partner Michele Critelli, and her beloved grandchildren Nora Mitnick, Ian Mitnick, Katie Cohen, and JB Cohen.
Carla Cohen spent 35 years as the Editor/Publisher of three Long Island weekly newspapers, The Floral Park Bulletin, The Franklin Square Bulletin, and The Gateway. She was a pioneer, and in 1986 was appointed Grand Marshall of the Franklin Square Memorial Day Parade, the first woman in the town’s history to hold that position. In 2012, she was recognized as Citizen of the Year for her many contributions to the community.
She was a longtime journalist and covered local and national news. She met presidents and cultural icons - but her focus was always on reporting important local stories and helping people in the community. She understood the power and importance of the press.
She received many honors and awards throughout her life but being Grammy to her four wonderful grandchildren was her favorite role.
Despite her tireless work ethic, family was most important to her. She loved celebrating birthdays, attending events with her grandchildren, and was happiest when spending time with all of us together.
She was an avid reader, a news-junkie, a captivating storyteller, and a lover of good meals (especially desserts), and lovely gardens. She spent most of her life in New York but after retiring to be close to Jeff and his family she became an active member of the Issaquah community and found loving friends and much joy in Providence Point. She was truly the matriarch of our family, she touched many lives, and she will continue to be an inspiration.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to: Kline Galland Hospice Services or American Cancer Society.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 27th at 1:00 PM at Temple De Hirsch Sinai, Bellevue Campus, 3850 156th Avenue SE, Bellevue, WA 98006.
