Our beloved Kay left us on September 6. We will always remember what a great life she led, so active and helpful to everyone. Born in Oakland in 1918, her nursing training was at St. Francis Hospital in San Francisco, and she passed the state RN examination with honors.
In 1941 she joined the Army Nurse Corp as a lieutenant at Letterman General Hospital in The Presidio of San Francisco. After the attack on Pearl Harbor some of the first returning wounded were in her care. It was there that she met and married M. R. (Jack) Wood, a young lieutenant serving in the coast artillery at adjacent Fort Scott. They were happily married for 71 years. While living in Richland, they raised three fine children: Ken, Jamie and Scott. Returning to active nursing she filled a variety of roles including in the ER, ICU, CCU, OB and shift supervisor. On rare occasions, when the stork got to the hospital before the doctor, she delivered babies. She earned her BA degree at the age of 60.
Her early life was very active, including roaming on horseback in the California hills. Her husband, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren will hold her always in loving hearts. You deserve a rest mom.
