Hazel grew up in Poulsbo, Washington and attended a one-room school. As a young woman, she moved to Seattle and held clerical and administrative positions at B&J Supply Company for 40 years, where she met her future husband, Oswald. In 1971-2, she served a term as president of the Northgate Chapter of the National Federation of Business and Professional Women. Besides her daughter, Kathleen, Hazel had a son, Dickie, who died in early childhood. During World War II, Hazel served in a local civilian ambulance corps. Outside of work, she was a Girl Scout leader; an active member of Eastern Star, Rainbow, Martha Club, and Daughters of the Nile; and a poll worker on election day for many years. After retiring, Hazel loved to garden, and she worked as a volunteer at the Shoreline Senior Center until well into her 90s. She was a loyal and thoughtful friend who stayed in touch with family and friends from all over the world, and she will be much missed.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Oswald Anderson. She is survived by her daughter Kathleen Koepsell and son-in-law Thomas Koepsell, her sister Helen Gaasland and brother-in-law Dennis Gaasland, and by several nieces and nephews. The family thanks the many health professionals who helped care for Hazel during her last years, including Harborview Senior Care Clinic, Foss Village and Home, and Evergreen Hospice.
