John (or J.W. or Sonny) was born October 9, 1945 in San Francisco, CA, where our dad was stationed in the U.S.Army during WWII. The family moved back to Seattle and John began his school years in the Shoreline School District at Ridgecrest Elementary. He attended Morgan Junior High and graduated with Shorecrest High School’s first class,1964. He volunteered and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam conflict.
John was a natural-born musician, blessed with talent for acoustic guitar, mandolin and an affinity for folk and country music. He partnered with like-minded local musicians performing around the Seattle area and hosting the Open Mic at Murphy’s Pub on N.E. 45th for over 25 years. His love of language surfaced in the names of groups he was a part of - “Tao Jones” and “Mid-life Chrysler.” His friends are legion. They faithfully kept him engaged in life and music.
In Everett, John owned Welk Music on Colby Ave. for several years. His collection of musical instruments and music paraphernalia was extensive. Music was his joy in life from his early years in the school band with teacher Jim Sjolund. Basically self-taught, he remembered song lyrics, music history and a vast repertoire of jokes for every occasion.
John was Vera’s most attentive caregiver for many years. Eventually, the time came when he allowed others to help him with that responsibility.
John had a big, compassionate heart for those in need and for animals. John’s final days were with exceptionally capable caregivers at Bright View Adult Family Home.
In the words of a song by John’s friend, Utah Philllips, “....if you don’t wake up tomorrow at all, I guess it’s old buddy, good night.”
