Joe passed away unexpectedly on Oct 11th, 2024, just two days after his 70th birthday. Joe was born a quadriplegic in the 1950's. He had a strong desire for adventure and was undaunted by his limitations. His desire grew stronger when he moved from a manual/push wheelchair to a motorized chair.
He embarked on several solo trips from Seattle to Victoria BC and Seattle to Vancouver BC and once he took a train to San Diego by himself. He visited Hawaii and Salt Lake City with help from friends. He flew in a 2-seater Robinson helicopter (flown by his brother); he took to the sky in a hot air balloon and flew in a silent glider plane. He even went sailing on Lake Washington.
Joe loved radios. He was a DJ at Nathan Hale High School in the 1970's and went on to get his ham radio license. He became a lifetime member of ARRL (American Radio Relay League). With help from his father, Joe would fly motorized and glider model planes, that is father built. They spent many hours flying their planes at Marymoor Park.
Green Lake was one of Joe's favorite places and he could be seen taking laps around the lake in his electric wheelchair. He was a long-time parishioner at Blessed Sacrament Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents Earl and Margaret St Aubin. Joe was a kind and generous soul, and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Funeral Mass will be held at Blessed Sacrament church in Seattle on Nov 4th at 2pm with reception following service.
