On the night of October 6th, surrounded by loving family, Kathleen Calvert Maryatt joined her parents Lawrence Calvert and Elizabeth Calvert Lewis and her sisters Virginia Calvert McAusland and Elizabeth Calvert Graham in heaven. She is survived by Charles Maryatt, her beloved husband of 18 years, her sister Laurie Calvert Parrott, three children Gary Grosenick (Michele), Susan Grosenick Newman (Carl), and CP Grosenick lll (Martha), seven grandchildren, one great grandchild, numerous nieces and nephews and the children by marriage to William Brinkley and Charles Maryatt.
Born in Seattle on March 4, 1926, Kathleen’s, infectious smile and zest for life was shared with many over her 91 years. Kay was a true Northwest native learning at an early age from her parents to love the great outdoors beginning during her childhood days with her parents, sisters and many friends on Lake Washington. With her parents and siblings, she learned how to fish in Alaska, and bird hunt in Eastern Washington. She became an avid tennis player and learned to golf in her later years.
As a teenager, she learned to ski with her parents and sister Gina at Mt Baker and Sun Valley. As an adult, she enjoyed skiing at Steven’s Pass, Sun Valley and in Europe with family and friends. She also enjoyed many years of boating with her parents, children and most recently with Chuck Maryatt in the waters of the Pacific Northwest, British Columbia and Alaska.
She was an active member at the Sunset Club, Seattle Tennis Club and Seattle Yacht Club where she enjoyed being with family and friends for years.
Her faith in God, oriented Kay and guided her actions in the world. She was an active member of St Thomas Episcopal Church in Medina, and in the last 45 years active at Trinity By The Sea Episcopal Church on Maui, and Epiphany Episcopal Church in Seattle near her childhood home, in the Mount Baker neighborhood.
In her golden years, she loved the time spent on her favorite island, Maui, Hawaii and with Chuck at the Maryatt family home on Whidbey Island. Kay loved nothing more than making those she cared for feel welcome, appreciated and loved. She was given the Gift of Hospitality at a young age. Learning to cook when she first married she taught all of her children to love to work in the kitchen, cook well and how to entertain guests. She was truly blessed in knowing how to entertain friends and family in her home.
Kay had a wonderful sense of humor and playful and positive attitude toward life regardless of what was thrown her way. She also gave time and resources to many charities such as the Ryther Child Center League, The Junior League, and The Lighthouse for the Blind.
Her grace and beauty will be sorely missed but will endure indefinitely through the treasured memories and traditions she leaves behind as her legacy. She was a true friend to all who knew her.
A private funeral service for family will be held Wednesday, October 18, at 4:00 pm, at Epiphany Episcopal Church. A celebration of her life will be held for family and close friends at the Sunset Club on December 2nd.
In Lieu of flowers, Kay wanted any donations to go to Epiphany Episcopal Church, The Ryther Child Center League or Providence Hospice of Seattle.
