Larry Earl Montgomery, age 62, departed this life on September 9, 2015 after an extended illness. He was born on March 4, 1953 in Bakersfield, California to the late Perry and Theola Montgomery. He was one of three sons born to that union.
During the early seventies, his parents moved the family from Berkeley, California to Compton, California. Larry attended and graduated from Dominguez High School in June, 1972. Undecided about the direction he wanted to take, he decided to join the U.S. Army a few months after graduation on November 28, 1972. He was stationed in Fort Ord, California. After training, he successfully performed the duties of a Field Radio Mechanic, and subsequently attained the rank of a Specialist 4. He was honorably discharged on November 26, 1975. He continued his service to his country by serving in the Army Reserves until November 27, 1978.
On December 25, 1976 he married and then later divorced Linda Titus. He raised one biological son (Larry, Jr.), adopted Linda's son (Marcus), in addition to four other children who were lovingly adopted by Larry. He was a family man who found joy in going for family walks after dinner, and taking vacations wherever there was water, whether it was in Laguna Beach or across the ocean in Hawaii. He also enjoyed bike riding and swimming. His love for children extended beyond his immediate family. He was a mentor and coach for one of the local little league baseball teams. Regardless if they won or lost, he was proud of their effort and dedication.
Not only was Larry a great family man, but he was a loyal and faithful worker at various Veteran Hospitals. His warm and engaging personality drew co-workers and patients to him.
Larry will be remembered by all who knew him for his beautiful smile and wonderful laugh. Playing harmless jokes on loved ones and catching them by surprise was a part of his personality. He had a big heart, and would give you the shirt off of his back if you asked for it. He may be gone from our presence, but he will always remain in our hearts and memories.
Larry is survived by his children; Marcus Montgomery, Larry Earl Montgomery, Jr, Zan Lockheart, Charlotta Lockheart, Tiffany Lockheart, and Tanieka lockheart, two Brothers; Donnie, wife Ruth, Montgomery of Sacramento, California, and Perry, wife Shahnaz, Montgomery, and their sons, Amin & Perry R.
