

Monty passed away April 8, 2023 peacefully in his sleep lovingly supported by his Family. Born 1929 in Seattle, WA he was the second child of Loren & Angie Holmes. He grew up on a family farm/marina on Commodore Way, Seattle, WA. He graduated from Ballard H.S. where he played football for the "Ballard Beavers". After graduation he played for the Semi Pro Football team "Seattle Ramblers" while working for Athletic Supply and serving in the US Army Reserve at Fort Lawton, Seattle, WA. He gained the position of Manager of Trophies and Engraving at Athletic Supply then went on to become part owner of the business until 1983 when he sold his share and started Athletic Awards Co. in Seattle where it still stands today. He met Shirlee McGee, his beloved wife, when he came to roll new logs under her houseboat on lake union. They married on 6/19/1953 and built their home above the Ballard locks. They shared many hobbies from collecting antiques to touring classic cars that he restored. He also purchased and restored a classic wood boat named "Wahoma" and had many treasured memories of cruising with Shirlee and his dog Winston with the Classic Yacht Assoc. Monty was also busy in the South Lake Union Business Community fighting to save jobs from the proposed South Lake Union Commons development in 1994. Monty is preceded in death by his wife Shirlee, Sister Lorraine, Brother in law Richard Ring and son Monty D. He is survived by his daughter Rani Thorning, Son in law Tim Thorning,Grandchildren Brett Holmes, Jason Thorning, Ben Holmes, Chelsie Thorning, Nephew Rich Ring, Niece Richelle Slater.
A funeral service for Loren will be held Sunday, May 7, 2023 at 12:00 PM followed by a reception at Evergreen Washelli Funeral Home, 11111 Aurora Ave N, Seattle, WA. A graveside service will occur Tuesday, May 9, 2023 at 1:00 PM in Evergreen Washelli Cemetery, 11111 Aurora Ave N, Seattle, WA 98133.
