Myrtle L. Pyles, born July 22, 1941, in Anniston Alabama was raised by her grandparents Houston and Ollie Pyles.
Myrtle graduated from Calhoun Country Training School in Hobson City Alabama in 1959, a historically black K-12 school. She later met and married the love of her life Cleveland Hughes, Sr., (February 18, 1961) and they moved to Seattle Washington to start their family. They had two children together Deborah in 1963 and Cleveland, Jr., 1967.
After Cleveland Hughes, Sr., passed away in 1968; Myrtle remained in Seattle and raised her children. Myrtle’s love for people was reflected in her career choices and life style. She was a grounding, supportive and unifying force. Throughout her career she worked at Boeing, Providence Hospital and King County, where she encouraged people of all ages. Through her church volunteered with the Black Prisoners Caucus in Monroe Washington where she participated in the annual Black Awareness celebrations bringing food,
laughter and authentic conversations to those far away from their own families.
Family members who moved to Seattle always had a welcoming place to live in the Hughes household before sprouting roots and getting their own place. Relationships were important to Myrtle and her friendships ran deep, with people of all cultures, ages and backgrounds some relationships spanning over sixty years. If you were her friend she had you back.
Myrtle loved to travel. She took annual trips by car with her children across country to Chicago and Alabama. She traveled to California, Canada,Las Vegas, Texas, Michigan and to the Philippians. Myrtle loved to crochet and made many blankets over the years for newborn babies in the Pacific northwest
Myrtle was preceded in death by Florice Christine Pyles (Mother) Willie Garrett (Father) and Cleveland Hughes, Sr. (Husband)
She leaves to cherish her loving memories Daughter Deborah (Anthony) Harris Son Cleveland Hughes Jr Grand Daughter Alexandria (Nelson) Caver Grand Son Trey Hughes Great Grand Daughter Aleyana Caver Brother Roy Knight Brother Kevin Knight and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Myrtle will be missed but not forgotten as she lives in each of our hearts. The stories, the lessons, the words of comfort, that look; and laughter will forever live on within each of us.
Mrs. Hughes, Miss Myrtle, Myrtle, T-bone, Old Girl, Myrt, Mom, Dea, Sis. You are
forever in our hearts! Rest well until we see you again in Heaven.
