The world was a brighter place on January 8, 1931 when Roy Winston was born in Rayville, Louisiana to the union of Eva and Robert Winston, Sr. The third boy of ten children, Roy was baptized at St. Peter Rock Baptist Church and attended Rayville Rosenwood Ella D. Britton High School. Prior to serving in the United States Army, from which he was honorably discharged in 1951, his first child Addie Lee was born.
Equipped with a good sense of humor, willingness to work hard and a pursuit of a better life, Roy ultimately followed his oldest brother Elonzo to Seattle, Washington where he married Lois L. Manley on October 17, 1954. As a couple, they had two children, Donald and Denise.
Roy was not only a proud father and husband but also a hard-working provider. While working for the United States Postal Service as a mail handler he also successfully tested his skills as a handyman and entrepreneur. He started Winston Movers in 1961 and Leisure World Club in 1976.
After 32 years with the Postal Service Roy retired. This new-found freedom gave him time to concentrate on his business endeavors which included transporting office and household furnishings throughout the State of Washington. He had a special fondness for taking guests to destinations ranging from local youth competitions to casinos as far away as Reno. These bus excursions provided him with captive audiences to flash his easy smile and share his fluid gift of gab.
On June 24, 2003 our Lord called his soft-spoken son home but thoughts of his youthful looks, big heart and knack for dialogue will always speak loudly.
Left to celebrate Roy?s life are his daughters, Addie Lee Broussard LA and Denise M. Johnson WA; his son, Donald R. Winston WA; and his grandchildren, Matthew Fields WA, Candace Broussard TX, Juleesa Johnson and Deidre Johnson both of WA. Also left to cherish his memory are his brothers, Elonzo Winston and Robert Winston, Jr. both of WA, Willie Winston IL, Lemmie Winston, Samuel Winston, Abe Winston and Howard Winston all of WA; and his sisters, Otis Winston OH and Anna Winston WA. Several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great-great nieces, great-great nephews, and a host of additional relatives and friends will also miss Roy. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois L. Winston; and his parents, Eva and Robert Winston, Sr.
