Tim was born on Feb. 10, 1944, to Warren Igoe King and Geraldine Eliza Hanlon in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was the fifth of seven children, along with his siblings Michael, Patrick, Katy, Shannon, Calleen and Terry. They were raised by their mother and each went on to noteworthy careers.
Tim moved to Portland as a teenager and transferred to Central Catholic High School, where he graduated in 1963. The following year, he met and fell in love with Gail Strouts. They married and had four daughters, Katy, Judy, Sally and Jane, all of whom were with him at the hospital in Seattle before he passed. Other family members were able to visit as well.
Tim graduated from Portland State University with a degree in accounting.
He spent decades working a union job with United Airlines, which fed his passion for traveling, both solo and with family. He traveled extensively through Europe, South America and Asia, including such unlikely destinations as Myanmar, Cyprus and several countries within the former Yugoslavia.
Upon “retiring,” Tim began a brand-new career as an agent for American Family Insurance in Portland, serving his clientele for well over a decade.
A devout, lifelong Catholic, he obtained a master’s degree in religious studies from the University of Portland. He was a generous person and always prioritized helping those in need.
Gail King passed away in 2007.
Tim married Alise Khusuwan in Chiang Mai, Thailand, in July 2019.
Tim later was diagnosed with more than one age-related illness, none of which dampened his infectious laugh, his gregarious nature, his love of Portland and of Oregon, and his curiosity about the world around him. While hospitalized in Seattle, at the end of his life, he spent part of the time cracking jokes.
Before his first heart attack in Sitka, Alaska, he’d been on a cruise ship for a King family reunion. After the heart attack, his daughter, Judy, arranged for him to be airlifted to Seattle in a Bombardier Aviation mid-sized jet. The man who loved nothing more than to travel ended his days, fittingly, on a cruise ship and a mid-sized jet.
Tim King is survived by Alise, his four daughters, Katy King (Dana Haynes), Judy King, Sally Padrow (Matt Padrow), Jane King Ayers (Eric Ayers), siblings Patrick King, Calleen Letaconnoux and Terry King, and his grandchildren Timmy Padrow and Emily Padrow.
Funeral services will be held at Ascension Catholic Church at 743 SE 76th Ave., Portland, OR 97215 on Thursday, July 10 at noon. A live stream option will be available for remote viewing. A reception will follow at the Irvington Club in NE Portland. The address is 2131 NE Thompson St, Portland, OR 97212.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Geraldine E. King Women’s Resource Center, a homeless shelter in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Center is operated by Volunteers of America, Utah.
