Bill Mayer, a 40 year resident of Ballard, passed away at Overlake Hospital, Bellevue on August 21, 2009 at the age of 92.
He was born in Oso, Washington on April 30, 1917 to Martin Mayer and Kate Franciska Eul. Bill attended schools in Oso and Arlington, Washington. He graduated from Arlington High School in 1935.
Bill worked for National Electric Products Corp., Seattle from June 1937 until he was drafted into the US Army in June 1942. He served his country as a combat infantryman in Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. Bill was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Victory Medal.
Following his honorable discharge in February 1946 he returned to National Electric Products Corp. In 1948, Bill began a career in the glass business with Belnap Glass. His career spanned over 40 years working for several glass companies. At his passing he was a member of the Glaziers and Glass Workers Local 188.
Bill was a unique person. He was the original "reuser and recycler". He could fix just about anything. If you needed something, he probably had it, and he knew right where it was. If he didn't have it, you probably didn't need it in the first place.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 30 years, Louise "Karyl" Wicker, his parents, his brothers; Martin, Melvin and Ludwig. He is survived by a sister, Margaret (Ralph) Neilson, Salt Lake City, Utah, one nephew, five nieces and numerous other family in the US, Canada and Germany.
The family wishes to thank Sunrise Assisted Living, Mercer Island and Bill's cousin, William Eul for taking exceptional care of our "Bill".
