Born April 19, 1929 in Shopville, KY - Died May 30, 2021, in Largo, FL
Dorothy Buchanan was born in Shopville, Ky near Somerset. She was raised on a small farm across the road from Flat Lick Baptist, one of the oldest churches in KY. She lived with her mother Maude, her grandparents, and Aunt Lydia and Uncle Tasso.
Dorothy loved horses, and one of the best birthday presents she received was from her mother Maude; a horse she named Pat. When she was 17 she was riding Pat, when a car drove by and stopped. The passenger of that car was Eldon Phelps. She said she almost fell off her horse when she saw him for the first time.
Two years later they married and were together for 64 years before Eldon passed in 2012. They rented their first house right next to the church that Dorothy grew up across from. Dan was born in Shopville KY in 1947. They lived in this area, but moved in the early fifties to the Cincinnati area to find work. Dorothy worked as a seamstress for Stearns and Foster for over 30 years and retired in 1986. Michael was born in 1954 just north of Cincinnati in Norwood, OH. Shortly after, they purchased their first home here.
Dan and Mike loved sports and Dorothy enjoyed watching them play, especially baseball. She and Eldon seldom missed a game, and we always appreciated having them there. Dorothy was an avid fan of Kentucky basketball, the Cincinnati Reds and Tampa Bay Rays thru her life.
Dorothy and Eldon loved to travel. Although mostly fishing or hunting trips, Dorothy loved to be outside and enjoyed the quiet places they went, always reading on the boat or in the cabin. After Mike left home, they continued to travel the country often with their friends. They liked the peacefulness of the Florida central lands, and came to fish on vacations at Lake Okeechobee. Upon retiring in 1987, they moved to Lake Placid, FL. They fished often and would share their catch with friends and neighbors, or more often for the local church they attended, Faith Baptist Church, as well as many other local churches.
Eldon passed in 2012. Dorothy and Michael traveled back to KY and Ohio yearly, as well as the Chicago area, to visit friends and family. She moved to Largo, FL to be near family and Michael in 2017. She resided here until her passing.
Thank you Dorothy, my Mother, for all you gave to Dan and me thru the years. Thank you for your love, understanding, caring, listening and the other qualities you shared and gave us. Thank you for always being there when we needed you. You have and will always be a part of me, and I will miss you dearly.

Beautiful Poem Written by Dorothy's son, Michael.
Mom, in many ways
You were our butterfly.
Beautiful in heart and soul
Floating about us
Quietly showing us the path
Behind us watching and helping us grow.
You gave us life and love and the wisdom
To build our own lives.
For this and so much more,
We love you, we miss you.
You are with the Lord and Dad
But you are still with us in our hearts and in our souls.
