Gary Dominick Falzarano, of Calabash, NC, passed away peacefully Friday, February 26th, with his wife, Marian, by his side. Gary was born on December 10, 1947, and raised in Nutley, New Jersey. He was Albert & Angela (Albanese) Falzarano’s first child of six. His siblings often claimed he was his mother’s (“mudder’s”) favorite.
As a child, Gary built houses in his family’s basement out of little pieces of wood, which began a lifelong fascination with building. He had an affinity for cars and particularly loved corvettes.
Gary grew up to be a legitimate, hard-working, businessman. His first job was selling mum’s from his wagon for 25 cents each. He owned a concrete business and built many houses & buildings throughout New Jersey. He was a proud Italian and loved taking trips to Atlantic City, Vermont, and Shop Rite.
Gary was unstoppable - always doing what he wanted to do. He cared for his loved ones deeply. He loved to talk. He thought he was a professor, giving lessons based on his unique school of thought (go-zintas). He will be remembered for his sense of humor, strong New Jersey accent, and clever one-liners. He got away with a lot because of his charm, kind heart, and baby blue eyes.
His passions included trying to cook as well as his mom, woodworking, gambling with his sons, and finding a bargain (while also being a big spender). He never sweat the small stuff - or the big stuff. Often telling people, “you worry too much.” Anything he was passionate about, he did with abundance.
Predeceased by his father, Albert Falzarano, and nephew, Phil Rodriguez, he is survived by his wife, Marian (Clarke) Falzarano; his mother, Angie Falzarano; his sons, Gary Jr. Falzarano, Marc Falzarano, and Matthew (Jessica) Falzarano; his step-daughters, Kristin Lowenthal & Kerri Lowenthal; his younger siblings, Bruce Falzarano, Marie Rodriguez, Karen (Thom) Boehlert, Louise (Joe) McCulloch, and Joey (Tina) Falzarano; his grandchildren, Gary III, Antonia, Gia, Tori, Dominick, Juliana, and Dylan; his nieces & nephews, Michael, Bryan, Traci, Molly, Maggie, Aaron, Christopher, Eric, Lisa, Laurie, Liz, Lars, and the prankster, Brian Boehlert; his Aunt Felda; and his cousin Marie Carlo.
He retired in 2010 and moved to North Carolina with his wife. There he started a business selling furniture that he built from his garage. He also served as a member of the Ocean Side Place Architectural Review Committee. He spent many hours loudly debating any topic with his brother-in-law, Andy Lundgren, and with his sister-in-law, Maureen, who live nearby.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Friday, March 12th at 10:00am at Saint Brendan the Navigator Catholic Church in Shallotte, North Carolina. Burial will follow at Mintz Cemetery in Ocean Isle Beach, NC.
