

Mr. Varnum was born in Brunswick County on April 18, 1933 and was the son of the late Samuel Claude Varnum and Bertha Hewett Varnum. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sons, Daniel Varnum and Scott Varnum, siblings, Buddy Varnum, Arcelia “Sis” Smigiel, Pearl McDonald, Lawnie Clemmons, Hoyle Varnam, Ralph Varnam, Josie Fulwood, Rev. Tracy Varnum, Ronie Varnam, Clifton Varnam and Curtis Varnam.
Mr. Varnam was a Commercial Fisherman and had also worked for the Corp of Engineers and in the Dredging Industry. He loved spending time in the Lockwood Folly River fishing with his gill net. He was a charter member of Coastline Volunteer Rescue Squad where he served for 27 years and a member of Dixon Chapel Methodist Church. He was the recipient of the Order of The Long Leaf Pine. Mr. Varnam was a Mason.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Jeanette R. Varnum of the home; two sons, Michael Varnum and wife Lauren of Graham, NC, Tony Varnum and wife Lori of Varnamtown; grandchildren, Joshua, Alyssa, Alexis, Aaron, Lisa; great-grandchildren, Adeline, Elijah, Conner, Katherine, Everette, Josie, Asher, Axel, and Jeanette; a brother, Oneil “Knot” Varnam and wife Virginia of Varnamtown; a sister, Eula Mae “Tuddie” Dixon of Varnamtown.
Funeral services will be held Saturday August 3, 2024 at two o’clock in the afternoon at Word Of Christ Fellowship, 1290 Stone Chimney Road with Reverend Gerald Kirby officiating. Burial will follow in Dixon Chapel Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Joshua Varnum, Terrance Galloway, Sammy Varnam, Easton Varnam, Hunter Varnam and Jay Howard Robinson.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
