

James was born on March 23, 1935, son of Lucy Hulin and George Hughes. He was an established farmer, plumbing and building contractor in Brunswick County for many years. Many who worked around him knew him as “Pops.” James always enjoyed helping others. He enjoyed gardening, working on his Farmall tractor and gathering clams and oysters from the Shallotte River. Deer hunting was among his favorite pastimes. He was a member of Seashore hunting club as well as McMilly hunting club. Preceding him in death were his parents George and Lucy Hughes, his wife Ruby C. Hughes, as well as brothers, Albert Hughes, Odell Hughes, Marshall Hughes, and sisters Lillie Carlisle and Betty Ross and great-granddaughter, Stella Davis.
Survivors include his three sons, Roger “Frollie” Hughes and wife Patti of Shallotte, Jeff Hughes of Robbins and Eric Hughes and wife Terry of Ocean Isle Beach; brother, Howard Hughes and wife Shirley of Ocean Isle Beach two sisters, Marie Somersett of Shallotte and MaryAlice Huddle of Granbury, Texas; four grandchildren Josh Hughes, Shannon Hughes Davis and husband Donny, Kayla Hughes, Dillon Hughes; and four great grandchildren, Haven Stryker, Bryce and Emma.
Visitation will be Wednesday, May 26, 2021 from two o’clock until three o’clock in the afternoon at White Funeral and Cremation Service, 3660 Express Drive, Shallotte.
Friends and family will follow in procession to a graveside service at three-thirty in the afternoon at Mintz Cemetery with Reverend Tim Carter officiating.
Pallbearers will be Josh Hughes, Dillon Hughes, Ubaldo Arteaga, Jerry Todd, Brandon Benton, and Steven Somersett. Honorary pallbearers will be Cameron Wicker and Stacey Ridgeway.
