

Jerry Wayne Chesnutt Sr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, met Jesus in the garden of Heaven on Monday evening, March 3, 2025. They walked and talked, and Jesus welcomed him home. Jerry was born in Sampson County, NC, on May 22, 1948, and grew up in Durham and Greensboro, NC. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War aboard the USS James C. Owens DD776 and later on the USS Everglades AD-24. Following his service, Jerry dedicated his career to Krispy Kreme Doughnuts as a regional route supervisor and A&O Church Furniture, beautifully furnishing many houses of worship.
A beacon of love and laughter, his spirit illuminated the lives of everyone he encountered. Known for his warm heart and infectious smile, he consistently prioritized his family’s needs above his own. As a devoted husband and father, he focused on their happiness and well-being, providing a strong foundation of gentle guidance and unwavering support. His deep devotion to his wife, Carleen, created a partnership filled with love, respect, and shared laughter, inspiring all who witnessed their bond.
His adoring children remember him as a guiding light and embodiment of strength and kindness. He cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren, sharing stories, creating cherished memories, and spreading joy. A man of remarkable character, Jerry instilled the values of loving God, perseverance, and integrity in his family. His passion for serving his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, shone through his dedication as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, church trustee, choir and music director, and “bus driver.” Jerry leaves behind a powerful legacy of love, kindness, and resilience.
Predeceased by his father, John Royce Chesnutt Sr.; his mother, Dorothy Mae Barton Chesnutt; (Granny) his brother, Robert Lee Chesnutt; his mother-in-law, Evelyn Seawell Laughlin Hilliard; (GG) her husband, CC Hilliard; his father-in-law, Carlton Worth Laughlin; his son-in-law, Sean Martin Barker; (Wingman) and his nephew, Henry Lee Chesnutt.
Jerry is survived by the love of his life, Evelyn Carleen Laughlin Chesnutt, married for 59 years; his “baby girl,” Cassandra Beth Barker; his son, Jerry Wayne Chesnutt Jr. (known as “Dude”); and daughter-in-law, Karen Lynn Chesnutt. He had five granddaughters: Beth-Anna Smith (Darius), Erin Lee Pruitt (Dylan), Mattison Grace Barker (fiancée Dylan Newman), Emily Ann Chesnutt, and Lauren Ashley Chesnutt. He also had three great-grandchildren: Oaklen Kyle, Olivia Rayne Pruitt, and Waylon David Smith. Three special individuals called him “paw-paw”: Kenneth Bevis, Brandon Bevis, and Allyson Bevis. Additionally, he is survived by three brothers: John Royce Chesnutt Jr. (Judee), “Judee Chester,” Douglas (Doug) Holt Chesnutt (Debbie), and Richard (Ricky) Earl Chesnutt (Cathy), along with many cherished nieces and nephews.
Jerry was a kind, friendly soul who never met a stranger or left anyone in need. He shared his love and the Gospel of Jesus Christ with an open heart. He will be profoundly missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Jerry’s life will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at 2:30 PM at the National Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Salisbury, NC. Though he has departed this world, his love and spirit will guide us forever, remaining in our hearts. “He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.” (Psalm 91:4). Rest in peace, sweet boy; you will be dearly missed!
