John was born September 11, 1952, in Concord, North Carolina and was the son of the late Stacy Smith and Ruth Herlocker Smith. He graduated from Bayden High School in Salisbury. John’s life was marked by his many passions and interests. Nothing gave him more pleasure than cooking for his family and friends. He had a deep love for the beach where he found peace and happiness. John also enjoyed shag dancing and spending time on the dance floor, especially in his younger years. He had an adventurous spirit; he even went skydiving. John shared a special bond with his beloved dog, Harley, who brought him great joy and companionship.
Named after his grandfathers, John carried forward a legacy of love, strength, and family values that he passed on to those around him. He was a man who found joy in the simple and meaningful moments, and his life reflected love, laughter, and connection. John will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his memory will live on in the hearts of those he loved. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Wayne Smith.
His memory will be cherished and kept alive by his wife of eleven years, Jackie Runyon of Supply, North Carolina; son, David “Matt” Smith (Amber “Hope”) of Port Charlotte, Florida; three daughters, Jennifer Ann Smith (Daniel Phannareth) of Waxhaw, North Carolina, Carrie Smith Hagler (Michael) of Port Charlotte, Florida; Candace Small (Kevin) of Mooresville, North Carolina; brother, Ronnie Smith (Sue) of Raleigh, North Carolina, David Jackson of Lumberton, North Carolina; 10 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Revelation 21:4 (NIV) “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain for the old order of things has passed away.”
