Linda (VanDriest) Matthews, age 60, passed away Tuesday evening, March 6, 2012. She was born March 31, 1951 in Milwaukee, WI, to Dr. John and Doris (Gestland) VanDriest. She was a graduate of Sheboygan North High School, class of 1969.
Linda's adventurous spirit took her from Lakeland College to Texas, where she graduated from Texas Christian University with teaching degrees in early childhood education and art, focusing on children with hearing disabilities and sign language.
Linda met Bruce Matthews at church. She and Bruce were united in marriage in Taylor, Texas on April 19, 1974. In 1980 Linda and Bruce relocated to Sheboygan.
Linda continued teaching throughout her life, earned her master’s degree in guidance counseling at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee and offered support to many young minds through the Sheboygan Area School District, including: being a teacher of the hearing impaired at James Madison Elementary, and a guidance counselor at North High and Farnsworth Middle Schools.
Linda was a loving mother to her three daughters: Amy, Laurie, and Lisa. She was also a true friend to many, seeing and appreciating all the best in those she loved so fully.
Linda was a free spirit, with a love of painting, travel, the ocean, and having fun wherever she went. She taught us all to love and see the world as a place of endless adventure and beauty, painted with bright, uninhibited colors, laughed, loved. Linda was a gift to us all and will be missed - missed as a wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend, and teacher. Her love will continue to fill our lives with joy. May God's love wrap her in peace and comfort, and help those who loved her to remember who she taught us all to be.
In addition to her loving husband, Bruce, Linda is survived by her daughters, Amy (Blain) Auer of Kalamazoo, Michigan; Laurie Matthews of St. Paul, Minnesota; and Lisa (Jon) Papic of Minneapolis, Minnesota; one granddaughter, Camilla Jane Auer; her mother, Doris VanDriest of Sheboygan; three brothers, Peter (Leah) VanDriest of Franklin, Tennessee; Dick (Teena) VanDriest of Appleton, Wisconsin, and Rob VanDriest of Missoula, Montana.
She was preceded in death by father, Dr. John VanDriest.
Her family invites you to a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. at First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, Sunday, March 11, 2012 where she and Bruce have attended for many years. Pastors James and Julia Hollister will officiate. A time of visitation and support will be held from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service.
“One should lie empty, open, choiceless as a beach: waiting for a gift from the sea.”
