He was born October 15, 1929, to the late Adrannas and Marie (Murphy) Hershberger in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Don was the AT&T (Western Electric) Consumer Products Manufacturing Manager when he retired in 1984. He attended Butler and Purdue Universities in Indiana.
He was a dedicated volunteer and philanthropist throughout his life. He volunteered with Sister Margaret and her mission for decades. Hundreds of bikes were repaired by him during his lifetime, and many children in Indiana and especially in Shreveport had a bike thanks to Don. He delivered meals at Thanksgiving and Christmas to those in need and engaged his family to participate with him in his volunteerism.
Don was devoted to his family. His love for his family was rivaled only by his service to his Savior and Church. Don held many roles in his church including being the church Treasurer, an Elder, Stewardship leader and participating wherever needed. Don was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church and presently, Immanuel Lutheran Church in Bossier City.
During his life, Don was a member of Toastmasters International and the Western Electric Speakers Bureau. He won checker and chess tournaments, he coached his son’s Little League team, was on the WESLA Board of Directors and led many successful Western Electric events.
Don was a giving soul who tried to make a difference in other people’s lives. He had a knack for making personal connections wherever he went. He knew no stranger; his love for others above himself will be treasured and missed by many.
He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Hershberger in Indiana, son, Greg Hershberger in Shreveport, granddaughter Christina Killebrew (Lane), great granddaughters Lauren, Ashlyn and Mallory Killebrew in Texas, a brother, John Hershberger, in California, and many nieces and nephews who were always in his prayers.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Marilyn D. Hershberger (Robinson), brothers Verlin and Jim and sisters Virginia Blakeslee and Mary Lou Salamon.
We thank the staff of The Cottages of the Glen whose kind, compassionate care brought peace to our father and to us. Thank you, Libby Kirkpatrick, for the kindness and compassion you bring to all of your residents. You are amazing.
Visitation is prior to the service, from 9:30 – 11:00. The celebration of Don’s life will begin at 11:15 on Saturday, November 20, at Centuries Memorial Gardens with a private internment after the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations to your favorite food charity would be cherished.
