Elizabeth “Betty” Joan Lininger Day was born in Columbus, OH on November 28, 1931. After graduating from Holy Rosary High School, she went to work for the phone company and, in 1951, met David Day, who was stationed at Lockbourne Air Force Base, on a blind date. After spending a few months together, David asked Betty to marry him. They wed on June 20, 1953 in Columbus, after David spent 14 months in Korea.
After their marriage, David was reassigned to Langley AFB and the newlyweds moved to Hampton, VA, where their daughter, Catherine Marie, was born on May 10, 1954. Following an honorable discharge from the Air Force, they returned to David’s hometown of Shreveport, LA, where, on March 6, 1956, their son, David Jr., was born. Their daughter, Karen Elizabeth, followed on September 24, 1957. Betty became a stay-at-home mom and was very involved in her children’s school and PTA as they grew up.
In June 1978, Betty and David moved to Kingwood, TX, where Betty, a lifelong active member of the Catholic Church, became a lay reader at St. Martha’s and enjoyed entertaining her grandchildren during their summer breaks. The couple returned to Shreveport in September 1989, where they’ve continued to make their home.
Betty died in the early morning hours of Saturday, October 5, 2013, following a diagnosis in May of pancreatic cancer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ellen Waldo and Walter Lininger; her brothers, Gene and Robert Lininger; and a grandson, Christopher Day.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 60 years, David; her daughter, Cathy, and husband, Tommy Key, of Greenwood; her son, David Jr., and wife, Carol, of Mooringsport; and her daughter, Karen, and husband Charles “Kenny” Hill of Huntsville, AL.
She also had a special bond with all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Heather Key; Amanda Key; Kayla Key Page and husband, Jackie, and their children, Jaxon and Morgan; David Day III; Amy Day Kohlman and husband, Joey, and their children, Taygan, Khloe and Brayden; Misty Shelton Phillips and husband, Pete, and their children, Levi, Cydney and Travis; Daniel Scott Hill; Charles Hill, Jr. and wife, Deidra, and their children, Brooke, Charlie III and Baleigh; and a special “granddaughter” who has been a part of the family for many years, Michelle Sims.
In addition, she leaves behind her sisters, Mary Ackerman, Patricia Jepsen and Ellen Ray, aka “The Golden Girls,” plus several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Tommy Key, Charles Hill Sr., Daniel Hill, David Day III, Joey Kohlman and Jackie Page.
The family would like to thank Dr. Anil Velevolu for his valiant effort and treatment to prolong her life while she bravely fought this disease; the fabulous staff at Grace Home in Shreveport who made sure she was well-loved and treated with dignity; Alan Prater and Mary Peretti, who provided her spiritual guidance; and Robyn Watkins and Valerie Johnson for their wonderful home hospice care.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Grace Home at 318-681-6781 in memory of Elizabeth Day.
The most important part of Betty’s life was first and foremost always her family. She will be missed.
