She graduated from Acadia University in 1942 and began her career teaching Home Economics. This was interrupted in 1945 when she met and married Andy, who had just returned from service in Europe. After the birth of their four children she returned to teaching until her retirement in 1983. In addition to a fulltime career and raising four young children she managed the nomadic life of a military family, all with great success. Following retirement she became even more active in her community serving with numerous organizations including the Canadian Cancer Society, the Care and Share Society of East Hants and the Camp Hill Auxiliary, mainly at the Veteran’s Wing of the Abby J. Lane Hospital. She was particularly active in the Enfield branch of the Royal Canadian Legion where she served in many capacities, including President. Mary twice received Volunteer Awards from East Hants.
She is survived by her children Randy, Pat Dennis, Nancy McNeil, JoAnn Harvie, son-in-law Barry Harvie, three grandchildren, Ben (Dawn) Harvie, Rick Dennis, Kim Dennis (Wayne Davis), and three great-grandchildren. She will also be missed by her numerous nieces and nephews and their families, many of whom had long, personal relationships with “Aunt Mary”. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother Robert, Andy, her husband of fifty years, son-in-law Ken McNeil and grand-daughter Joleen Harvie-Pittman (Jodi Pittman). Throughout her life she maintained the focus on family and community represented by these activities and relationships. A visitation will be held at Ettinger’s Funeral Home in Shubenacadie on Saturday October 13, 2012 from 2 to 4pm with a Legion Memorial Service at 2pm.
