

WINTER, Michael “Mike” – 80, Upper Rawdon, passed away February 22, 2012 in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born in Köln, Germany he was a son of the late Johannes and Cecilia (Kolbas) Winter. Mike immigrated from Germany when he was 19 and went to Douglas Lake Ranch, BC, where he worked as a cowboy and also worked on the oil rigs. He moved to Nova Scotia where he met his future wife, Ruth Fenton. He worked for Tide Water Construction, had a T.V repair business and a recycling business. Mike also owned and operated Hillcrest Hog Farm. He was the founder of the Rawdon Fire Department in 1971, and remained an active member. Mike enjoyed sailing and enjoyed time in the woods. He is survived by his sons Darren, David (Sheri) and Donald (Michelle); granddaughter Haley, grandsons Sam, Warner and Carter; sisters Agnes, Hanni, Fina and Sigrid; brothers Fritz and Siegmund; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Ruth (Fenton) Winter. Visitation 7-9pm, today in Ettinger Funeral Home, 2812 Highway 2, Shubenacadie. Funeral service 2pm, Saturday, February 25, in St. David’s Anglican Church, Upper Rawdon, Rev. Carson Baxter officiating. Interment to follow in the Upper Rawdon Cemetery. A reception will be held in the Upper Rawdon Community Hall. Family flowers only donations may be made to a charity of your choice in memory of Mike.
