Joann is survived by her son Murray Glen Sullivan III, daughter-in-law Joni Sullivan, and her cherished granddaughter Ruby, all of Sikeston.
Joann skipped two grades and graduated as valedictorian from Valley View High School at just sixteen years old. She went on to attend Arkansas State University, where she earned both her Bachelor’s and Master of Science in Education. While at Arkansas State, she was honored as the Wilson Award recipient, recognizing her as the top student in her class, an achievement that reflected her lifelong dedication to excellence.
Joann devoted over 36 years to education, shaping the lives of countless students throughout southeast Missouri. She taught at Portageville High School, Cooter High School, and spent the majority of her career with Sikeston Public Schools, where she served as Chairman of the English Department at Sikeston High School. She also taught college-level English through Southeast Missouri State University and Southwest Baptist College. Known for her passion for literature and high standards, she was deeply respected by both her students and colleagues.
Beyond the classroom, Joann was actively involved in the Sikeston community. She contributed her time and talent to the Sikeston Little Theatre, directed high school plays, and supported numerous educational and civic organizations. She was recognized as Sikeston Teacher of the Year and was a member of several professional organizations, including Phi Delta Kappa, the Missouri State Teachers Association, and the National Council of Teachers of English.
Joann and her husband Murray were devoted supporters of the Sikeston Bulldogs and lifelong fans of the Arkansas State Red Wolves. She was especially proud of her connection to Arkansas State University and remained an active supporter, rarely missing a home football game until recent years. Joann served on the Arkansas State Alumni board.
Above all, Joann treasured her family. After many years, she and Murray were overjoyed to welcome their granddaughter Ruby, who quickly became the center of their world. Joann’s love for her family was evident in everything she did.
Joann will be remembered as a dedicated educator, a proud alumna, a loyal supporter of her community, and a woman who deeply loved her family. She leaves behind a legacy of commitment, strength, and care that will continue to live on in the many lives she touched.
