

Terry Michael Herndon, age 70, of Sikeston, died May 9, 2015, at his residence. Born November 20, 1944, in the Como Township of New Madrid, Mo., to the late Kedric J. Herndon and Ellen Taylor Herndon (Ward), he was a graduate of the Sikeston High School class of 1964. He graduated from Southeast Missouri State University in 1968 with a degree in Agri-Business. He joined the United States Air Force in 1969, and married Jackie Lee Baker on June 22, 1969, in Big Spring, Texas. During his 20 years in the military, he served as a pilot and flight instructor. He retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1989 with the rank of Major, having a distinguished military career, including four tours in Vietnam. Terry was the recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross along with multiple other commendations and awards. After retirement he returned to Sikeston where he was employed by the City of Sikeston as City Planner, and later Scott County as Superintendent of Roads and Bridges.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Sikeston.
In addition to his wife, Jackie, who survives of the home, other survivors include: one son and daughter-in-law, Jared and Leslie Herndon of Sikeston; one daughter and son-in-law, Heather (Herndon) and Clay Sloan of St. Louis; two brothers, Gary Ward of Temple, Texas and Leigh Ward of McAllen, Texas; three sisters, Sherry Turner of Missouri City, Texas, Debbie Bothe of Sugar Land, Texas and Pam Smith of Austin, Texas; and two grandchildren, Megan Herndon and Nicholas Sloan.
Also surviving are his aunt, Mona McReynolds; cousins Mike, Marty and Dana McReynolds, Greg Lee, and Suzie (Lee) and husband Garry Gibbs.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a special uncle and aunt, Meredith and JoAnna Lee.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 14, at the First United Methodist Church.
Interment will follow at 3 p.m. on Thursday at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield, with Rev. Geoff Posegate presiding. Military honors will be provided by the United States Air Force Military Honor Guard Unit.
