I would like to extend my deepest condolences to Professor Drew’s family. I was one of his students at UMD/USG and had the privilege of taking a few of his classes, which I truly enjoyed. He was a wonderful professor—kind, engaging, and always encouraging us to participate by calling on us by name. His memory, his legacy, and the lessons he taught me will stay with me forever.

Who was Alan Drew?  Just read all the comments on this page and you will find out.  He was a loving husband, a devoted father, a beloved grandfather,  a true  friend, a wonderful mentor, a dedicated  teacher, a trusted colleague, a worthy adversary, an untiring advocate for the poor and underprivileged.  All this in one lifetime!  We were fortunate to know him as a friend,…funny, witty, kind and generous. So…who was Alan Drew?  He was a kind, honest, upright, hard working, forthright man.   There is a special Yiddish word reserved for such a man….Alan Drew was a MENSCH!  We will miss him and send Renay and all his family our condolences for the loss of such a man.  We need more of his kind in the world.

I met Alan trying a gang trial case in MoCo. Ate lunch with him; ruminated on the case facts; at times, stayed late to handle his client’s clothes, so he could enjoy dinner with his wife.  A true believer in the defense of the accused! Thank you for being a friend…RIP.

Alan loved Chelsea. It was a mutual love affair. As my car entered Alan and Renay’s drive way, Chelsea would bark in great excitement as she spotted Alan. Renay regaled me with wonderful stories of Chelsea sleeping on the sofa beside Alan as he watched the news. Other times, Alan had to drive Chelsea to the mail pavilion as she refused to walk if there were Amazon/UPS trucks nearby. The stories were endless! Alan, your loving hand with Chelsea exemplified your steady light on all you did for others. You have passed the baton of integrity to us all.  Your light will shine forever in our hearts. I send heartfelt condolences to Renay and family.  Alan was a good neighbor and friend.  He always greeted me warmly and had something funny to say when I asked  him a question.  May his memory be a blessing.

Alan was always one of my favorite people. We spent many holidays & celebrations together. He was always there & what I mean by that is that he was present. Alan was most of the time a quiet person, maybe in comparison to the rest of us. But, he always made whoever he was talking to feel special. He had a wonderful sense of humor and made me laugh out loud many times.

My heart is truly breaking for Renay and the family. Alan was such a kind and thoughtful man and whenever we got together for a holiday or family occasion, he always took the time to talk to everyone, even our kids, and showed genuine interest in how everyone was doing and what they were up to. Michael often commented on much he enjoyed his conversations with Alan, how they could talk about a wide variety of subjects, and how he would look forward to the next family get together.  I know just how much Alan's absence will felt and how much he will be missed by everyone who had the benefit of knowing him. My thoughts, my prayers, and my deepest condolences are with his family.

Dear Renay,

We were deeply saddened to learn of Alan’s passing on September 26. As dear friends, this loss touches us deeply, and our hearts go out to you and your family during this difficult time.

Although we never had the opportunity to meet your sons, you and Alan always spoke of them with such warmth and pride. It was easy to see how much you valued your family, and their importance was woven into our conversations.

We are grateful to Orhan and Cathy Suleiman, who introduced us and were steadfast companions to both of you over so many years. Our friendship truly blossomed as we shared time, especially during gatherings with MATA. The dinners, fun conversations, and laughter at our favorite spots, as well as memorable evenings hosted by the Suleimans, will always stay with us.

Alan had a remarkable way about him—he listened intently and, when he spoke, was thoughtful, witty, and often quite funny. We cherished his "say-it-like-it-is" nature and the honest discussions that made every meeting special. He was always respectful, a gentleman, and, above all, a devoted husband to you, Renay. We often saw the ways he tried to make life brighter for you, whether pulling out a chair, bringing appetizers and drinks, or lovingly defending your point of view. His kindness and devotion were clear to all.

We treasure the memories of meeting you both in Puerto Rico this past February—sharing laughter in Old San Juan, enjoying piña coladas and mojitos, and welcoming you into our home in Guayama. Alan left, promising to return. We are deeply saddened that we will not have that chance, but we look forward to welcoming you soon.

We will miss his welcoming and loving presence. We will always remember Alan fondly and will feel his spirit as we continue to gather and share friendship with you.

May Alan’s memory be a blessing, and may you find strength in the love that surrounds you.

My friend, colleague and birthday twin, I am so glad that I got to do one last court case with you last fall, and glad even that you kind of bitched me out via text message a couple  of weeks ago.  I was hoping to see you again soon and will miss your huge heart and sense of humor.  

Your memory will always be a blessing to me and may it also be a blessing to your lovely wife and children.  You are missed already Alan.

My sincere condolences to Alan’s family. Alan was such a good, kind man who clearly cared about others. He always made me smile.

Alan handled the most challenging cases with great skill and cleverness. He was never afraid to try a case if that is what the circumstances dictated.

And while he fought the toughest of battles, he did not hold a grudge or let the fight get in the way of professionalism.  He also didn't let the battle get in the way of a good joke to ease the tension.

We were adversaries, colleagues and friends for four decades- I will miss the twinkle in his eye and his ability to make the practice of law fun.

I extend my deepest condolences to the family of Professor Drew. He was an exceptionally brilliant mind and an outstanding professor. His dedication extended beyond the classroom, always willing to provide assistance both inside and out. His remarkable sense of humor and ability to find the positive in every situation were truly inspiring. This news has deeply saddened me, and his absence will be profoundly felt. Sleep well Professor!

Alan Drew was not just an attorney, but in fact was a long time Public Defender.   He was someone dedicated to the cause of representing indigent individuals in our criminal justice system, and he was easily one of the best in the business.   His passing is a huge loss for the legal community in which he worked, but his passing will be felt especially by his Maryland Office of the Public Defender family.

Cathy was decorating our tree one year, and Renay commented she had never decorated a Xmas tree. So Cathy invited her, and after that it became  an annual event with both Alan and Renay decorating our Xmas  tree!
