Ken Dick, to many Kenny, was born April 18, 1934 to Grantham and Blanche Dick in Odenton, Maryland. He was the third of 7 children. He attended the Millersville Elementary School and graduated from Arundel High School in 1953. It was there that he met Gwen and they were married October 9, 1954.
At a very young age he operated heavy equipment for Barton’s Sand and Gravel, Asphalt and Concrete Company in the evening, weekends and summer vacations. He became very efficient as an operator which proved to be very helpful in later years when he started his own business.
Ken served his country four years by joining the Air Force and spent a tour of 18 months in Japan. He worked in security as an Air Police. Upon returning to the states he was stationed at Samson Air Force Base in Spokane, Washington. It was there that their first child, Randy Wayne, was born on April 9, 1957. On October 27, 1959 he was blessed with a daughter, Vicki Lynn.
After leaving the Air Force he worked for Mays and Malcolm construction for 13 years. In the fall of 1970 he went out on his own and bought a dump truck, trailer, and a bulldozer and started his own business, “Ken Dick Excavating”. He said “If we could make it through the winter of that year we could make it with God’s help”. For 35 years he dug pools, basements, even basements under existing houses. Took down huge trees and did final grading. He would be right on the mark every time. Someone even said that he was so good that they would not be afraid to let him pick their teeth with that loader. He was instrumental in building the Fellowship Hall addition to the Beltsville Church. He also helped the Beltsville School save a significant amount of money on their expansion by suggesting that they build the addition to the school underground. And of course he did the job. Ken has been a hard worker all of his life, having a garden and always keeping his lawn well manicured.
In 1963 he built our first home at 2200 Apple Tree Lane, Silver Spring, Maryland, where he lived until his death.
Kenny didn’t have any degree or letters behind his name. But to his family he had one of the highest and noblest degree any one could ever have. He was the most thoughtful, kind, helpful, caring person to everyone! He fought a good fight, finished the course and kept the faith which he will be rewarded with a crown of righteousness at Jesus’ coming.
He is survived by his wife, Gwen, of sixty nine years, son Randy Dick and his wife Sharon, his daughter Vicki Patton and husband Terry, 7 grand children Jason, Joshua, Amy, Donnelle, Ashley, Bobbi Jo, and Taylor, and 12 great grandchildren. His sister Jean McIntosh, and many nephews and nieces. He loved them all dearly.
