Dorothy Carleton Sheppard, 99, passed away on June 4, 2023 at Aspenwood Senior Living Center in Silver Spring, Maryland after a brief illness. Ms. Sheppard was born in Washington, D.C. on April 18, 1924 to Laura and Arthur Carleton and was a lifelong resident of both Washington, D.C and Silver Spring, Maryland.
She attended McKinley High School and enjoyed telling her family stories of her remarkable time spent living and working in the metropolitan area. As a young girl, she and her cousins would skip school to eat hot dogs and watch the Washington Senators baseball games and drag race friends in her father’s Pontiac down Rhode Island Avenue.
As she entered professional life, Ms. Sheppard worked for the Supreme Court of the United States in the Clerk of Courts office and vividly recalled meeting various justices, including Thurgood Marshall as a lawyer before he became an associate justice. Ms. Sheppard also worked as an administrative assistant at Acacia Life Insurance Company and the Daily Record newspaper.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Harold L. Sheppard, and sons Robert Sheppard of New York, and Clifton Sheppard of Virginia. Ms. Sheppard is survived by her daughters-in-law Virginia Sheppard of New York and Dianna Sheppard of Virginia, grandchildren Crystal (Charles) Lewis of North Carolina, Lindsey (James) Dean of Ohio, Brittany (William) Doran of Washington, Cory Sheppard of Virginia, lifelong friends Anthony and Patricia Lipuma of Maryland, and several nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren. A celebration of life and private interment will be held at Ft. Lincoln Cemetery in Maryland at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to The Children's Inn at NIH (www.childrensinn.org).
